چکیده

The glide-path scans of the LIDARs at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) are used to calculate the eddy dissipation rate (EDR), the internationally adopted metric for turbulence reporting/alerting, by using the structure function approach based on the radial velocity data. The EDR so determined is compared with the turbulence intensity calculated from the Quick Access Recorder (QAR) data of transport category commercial aircraft landing at HKIA. The two sets of EDR data are well correlated, though there is considerable spread of the data points in the scatter plot. The spread may be related to the discrepancy between the LIDAR velocity data and the actual wind encountered by the aircraft, as well as the transient and sporadic nature of the turbulence itself. Two examples of the EDR profiles from the LIDAR and the QAR data are discussed.

Calculation of turbulence intensity based on spectrum width data of a Doppler LIDAR

In addition to low-level windshear (below 1600 feet), low-level turbulence could also adversely affect arriving/departing aircraft at the airport. Turbulent airflow may occur in clear-air/non-rainy weather conditions, e.g. terrain effect at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) or building’s disruptions at Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) in Japan. Such airflow disturbances cou...

Reprint 898 Forecasting Headwind Profiles and Low Level Windshear Using LIDAR Velocity Data and a Chaotic Oscillatory-based Neural Network

Two Doppler LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) systems have been operated by the Hong Kong Observaotry (HKO) at the Hong Kong International Ai rport (H KIA) for the det ection and alerting of low-level windshear to be encountered by the aircraft. The windshear al erting algorithm is based on the automatic identification of abrupt changes of headwinds along the glide paths of HKIA, which are me...

A comparison of cloud top heights computed from airborne lidar and MAS radiance data using CO2 slicing

Data from two instruments onboard the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) ER-2 high-altitude aircraft have been utilized in the largest validation study to date in assessing the accuracy of the CO2-slicing cloud height algorithm. Infrared measurements of upwelling radiance from the MODIS (ModerateResolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) airborne simulator (MAS) were used to genera...

Development of Low-level Turbulence Advisory System for Aircraft Operation

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has developed the LOw-level Turbulence Advisory System (LOTAS) together with Osaka University. LOTAS introduces new features such as low-cost Doppler radar/lidar, landing difficulty estimation, short-term prediction of radar echo distribution and text message uplink using ACARS to resolve issues related to existing low-level windshear detection and warning...
